Sophia Bakscha: "Everything that is heavy needs to appear light - this is the biggest challenge."
Daemon Concept's Hungarian artist jewelry, designed by Sophia Bakscha, also known as Sophia Rotas, combines biology and technology in a neo-transhuman and gender-neutral style. But Bakscha, above all else, wants women to appear powerful and invulnerable by wearing her jewelry. Her jewelry looks fragile and delicate on one hand, but sends a message of strength.
In the media, Daemon Concept creations are described as armor. Most women and especially young girls face aggression on a daily basis, sexual harassment, body shaming on the streets or cyber bullying. This is what Rotas has in mind when she designs her collections. She wants to remind us of the violence that women, and especially trans women, are always exposed to; a constant danger that is by no means abstract.
The inspiration for your work as a jewelry designer is to create something that comes from the idea that we live in the future. The only reference to the past is in Greek mythology, which is where the name of the label Daemon Concept comes from. The jewelry, is made from high quality recycled silver and features sculptural nose septums, mouth guards and earrings in futuristic natural shapes. The label was recently seen at this year's Milan Fashion Week and, after being more in the rave scene, has moved into the mainstream. Bakscha sees her jewelry as an ongoing experiment, showing that in a small, interconnected world, we are never truly alone. The jewelry is titled "natural beyond nature," meaning to embrace the man-made parts and how we change ourselves.

"We are never truly alone no matter how we feel"
What is the inspiration behind your jewellery line and how would you phrase your message?
It’s the rhythm of mine and my friends and friend’s music translated into symbols.
Not really a message but a continuous experiment to prove that in a small interconnected world we are never truly alone no matter how we feel - embracing the artificial and continuously changing parts of ourselves - that is why the work is titled “natural beyond nature “.
"Invisible threads are the strongest ties."
Why did you choose this name daemon concept?
Daemons are Greek mythological creatures, known as the messengers between humanity and deities. It describes an experience that is both digital and ancient in an ideal world, by placing less emphasis on individual talent. Invisible threads are the strongest ties.
Who is the person you hope would wear what you make?
It’s for those who call home a place they have never been before.
And how do you hope it makes them feel?
Everything that is heavy needs to appear light - this is the biggest challenge. To emerge in power but keep as much fragility as possible - different flow of shapes but the destiny is the same for each design to become armor and adornment.
How did you start as a jewellery designer?
I worked as an art director and stylist for more than a decade - and worked alongside most of my favorite musical artists to build their image for videos and editorials - this often calls for costume making accessories and it was essential to become good at collaborating with designers - it came as natural evolution to create my jewellery brand, Daemon Concept. I never accepted this as a zero sum game - as I enjoy the role of creative director for my own personal work - but once that mission is completed I also love to contribute to projects of others and guide the paths of productions by synthesizing the right language for it .
Where is your jewellery made and how do you market and sell it?
Everything at the moment is made within the European Union and Uk, and I would say bespoke fine jewelry is our strongest suit alongside of course direct to consumer stores for the permanent collections. Digital presence makes it highly possible to meet people around the world we share ideas with.
